John’s childhood was complicated by his parents’ separation and the struggles of his single mom. There were good times, but other experiences were so traumatic he’s blocked the specifics from his memory.
Growing up, John battled anxiety and depression. “I often felt worthless – I was really hard on myself,” he admits. Despite those challenges, he was determined to pursue a career and to create a loving family, and he succeeded in doing both.
Then, a debilitating health condition turned his world upside down. Seizures made John’s job impossible. With medical bills on top of day-to-day living expenses, the family spiraled into a financial emergency. The strain on his marriage was too much, and John wound up on the streets.
Physically broken, John landed in the hospital where his hopelessness hit a new low. What John didn’t realize was that his situation was about to take a profound turn. As soon as he was well enough, the hospital brought him to the Allentown Rescue Mission.
“Since day one, I’ve felt support and compassion.”
Through our Emergency Shelter, John’s health issues and basic needs were addressed. In our Transformation Program, John devoted himself to learning the Lord’s purpose for his life. “I had the time and resources to map out how best to help my family, and myself,” he shares.
John received guidance, took classes and qualified for donor-funded financial assistance to embark on a new career path, all while strengthening his faith in Christ. John also gave back, serving on the Clean Team Workforce.
These days, John is working full-time as a forklift driver and is back at home with his family. His anxiety and depression have been greatly reduced. “Now that I’m closer to Jesus, I’m stronger and more capable,” he smiles.
This Easter, John is experiencing the gift of new life! He has been transformed and empowered to begin his next chapter – thanks to your support! “This place made an enormous impact on me and my family. I’ll be forever grateful for the help and friendship I received!”
