The green-vested crew that recently trawled the Theatre District scooping up discarded waste and recyclable materials wasn’t a group of city employees. Nor were they neighborhood volunteers on a beautification kick.
They were actually members of The Clean Team, a group of formerly homeless men who are turning their lives around via the Allentown Rescue Mission. “We began the program in 2008,” says Michael Mauro, Clean Team manager. “It’s part of our Life Skills program, and helps them prepare to find full-time work, while saving up money and getting ready to move out of the Mission,” he says of the team’s members.
