“Hope Takes Root”: Greg’s Story of Giving Back

There’s something powerful about a fresh start—something that speaks to the heart of what we believe and witness every day at the Allentown Rescue Mission.

For Greg Pappas, that fresh start didn’t begin with success or certainty. It began with a broken truck and a handmade trailer. Armed with a degree in education but drawn to working outdoors, Greg chose a different path—one that would grow into Pappas Landcare and Construction more than 30 years ago. What started small became something much greater than a business. It became a place where lives were shaped.

Over the years, many young men came to work for Greg with little direction. Some stayed for decades, becoming like family. Others moved on, carrying with them the skills and confidence to start businesses of their own. Greg didn’t just teach landscaping—he modeled responsibility, perseverance, and purpose. He invested in people.

Living in downtown Allentown, Greg began to feel a quiet but persistent pull to serve his neighbors more directly. At first, it was simple acts of kindness—dropping off clothing and shoes at the Mission. But as time passed, those small gestures grew into a deeper commitment.

At a stage in life when many begin to slow down, Greg chose instead to lean in.

He began volunteering with men in the Mission’s eight-week Transformation Program, helping prepare them for job interviews. But Greg quickly realized that before a man can confidently answer interview questions, something deeper needs attention.

So he starts somewhere unexpected—with the heart.

Sitting across from each man, Greg asks honest, meaningful questions: Why are you here? Where have you been? What are you passionate about? Where do you want to go? These conversations aren’t rushed. They’re intentional. They create space for reflection, honesty, and hope.

From there, Greg encourages journaling and personal reflection. He helps each man begin to see a future for himself—and to recognize the obstacles and pitfalls that may stand in the way.

But perhaps Greg’s greatest contribution isn’t what he teaches—it’s how he shows up.

“One of the most important things we can do,” Greg says, “is simply listen. Sometimes people just need to share their hardships.”

And so he listens.

In that listening, something powerful happens. Walls come down. Trust begins to form. And in that trust, hope takes root.

Greg admits he didn’t fully understand the depth of the Mission’s work until he became personally involved. “I’m amazed at the layers of programs here,” he shares. “The staff is truly dedicated. They serve in ways most people never see, and it makes a real difference in our community.”

Today, Greg continues to walk alongside the men he meets—and hopes to stay connected long after they complete the program. For him, this is more than volunteering. It’s a calling to invest in lasting change.

From humble beginnings with a broken truck to helping rebuild lives, Greg’s story is a reminder that transformation doesn’t just happen within walls—it happens through people willing to show up, ask questions, and truly listen.

And sometimes, that’s exactly where a new story begins.
