Gateway Center to a better life (emergency shelter)

Not Just a Bed and a Meal…A Chance for a New Beginning
Our Gateway Center (emergency shelter) is the most basic of our programs and is often the entry-point into our long-term programs. Emergency Shelter receives clients - literally - off the street, who have exhausted all support and typically have multiple and long-term problems.

The Mission provides 48 beds for homeless men; the shelter is open 5:20 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

There is a 15-day limit; shelter use is not an answer to homelessness, but a first step to self-sufficiency.

The men are encouraged to join a long-term recovery program to resolve the root causes of their homelessness so they can end it permanently. They can join one of our long-term programs or be referred to another agency if needed.

Free services include nutritious meals, personal care items, beds, clothing, shower facilities, and chapel services.

In 2007, 616 individuals were served by the Gateway Center Emergency Shelter. 259 were placed in programs to end their homelessness, or in housing and 97 got jobs.

Wheels of Time Street Rod Association

One of the many loyal supporters of the Allentown Rescue Mission is the Wheels of Time Street Rod Assoc. It all began 30 years ago when 12 young men started a car club specifically dedicated to the hobby of street rodding. In 1979, the decision was made to hold annual car shows. In its 30 year history it has grown to be the largest show on the east coast run completely by volunteers. The organization makes donations to local charities such as the Allentown Rescue Mission, Good Shepherd Home, ARC Association, Bethany Children's Home and others. They also sponsor a scholarship program for young men and women pursuing further education in the automotive field.
